UPDATE FROM CYNTHIAMonday, 9/19, 9:00PM ET Cynthia spent the day in a Tyvek Suit decontaminating animals
at the staging area in New Orleans. This is the temporary station
they set up for rescuers to bring the animals to after they are
removed from streets and empty houses. The animals come in
almost black from the flood residue. Cynthia's job today was
to give them their initial cleanings.
After the animals are treated, they are transported to the Lamar-Dixon
Expo Center by trucks who go back and forth on a regular basis.
While all of the scenes she has imprinted in her memory over the last
10 days have served to toughen her stomach, so to speak, today she
saw some dogs who were in really bad shape. One of the dogs, for
example, couldn't stand up. And another dog had been forced to
eat its sibling, who had died in the flood, according to the
rescuers who brought him in. Very sad.
Cynthia is now having a well-deserved beer with the crew of rescuers.
She will call us later with some rescue stories.
