UPDATE FROM LOUISIANA:Saturday, 9/24, 9:00PM ET Cynthia has now also left Lamar-Dixon. Last night, she
tried to get back into the facility, but since she didn't
know the "secret password" they didn't let her in. We
are not kidding. After spending some time outside in the
torrential rain wondering what to do, two other volunteers
were kind enough to let her sleep
in their car in a parking lot during the hurricane last night.
We are not sure exactly what is going
on at Gonzales. Last we heard, the "essential" crew are there
caring for the remaining animals.
We will try to find out if it is going to ramp
up there again. We hope the rescue efforts get back to the
level they were at before Hurricane Rita. We know many
rescuers want to go back out.
Laura was at Tylertown, MS where she helped take care of
the animals that were left. One disturbing piece of information
she learned was that many blind dogs are now being brought in.
These dogs were trapped on rooftops for so long in the harsh
sun that their retinas were burnt out.
Cynthia and Laura are now driving out of the area toward
Memphis or St. Louis, depending on weather, traffic, and
how tired they are.
Now that the attention is shifting to Texas and whatever the
aftermath of Rita will be, our volunteers will stay on top of
events. Project Starfish will also put major effort/resources
into finding homes for the animals that were saved and to get
as many out of the shelters in Louisiana as possible.
