UPDATE FROM NEW ORLEANSSunday, 9/25, 5:30PM ETToday Laura spoke with contacts at Lamar-Dixon and Best Friends. Here is her update on the situation.
According to a friend with the HSUS in Gonzales, New Orleans is bright and sunny today. Teams were out early this morning rescuing animals in the city. In fact, a few teams were already out yesterday afternoon. This is great news.
The shelter at Lamar-Dixon is gearing back up and is taking in animals again. Best Friends and The Humane Society of Louisiana, both located in Tylertown, MS, are also getting back up to speed with rescues and intakes. At the moment, Best Friends has about 600 animals. Check back later for Laura’s photos of their shelter.
Laura’s contact at Best Friends said that they anticipate being there for a long time, “as long as it takes.” At the moment, both Best Friends and HSLA have more provisions than they will ever use, so please do not send more supplies. Best Friends is actually looking to donate their overstock to other groups working on animal rescue in the Gulf Region.
Both groups, however, said that volunteers are still sorely needed and ask people to come help them ASAP. If you do volunteer, you will at minimum need sturdy shoes, comfortable clothing, and a rain jacket/poncho. There are more items you will need, but Laura said some people didn’t have these three items and it was hard for them.
If you are interested in volunteering or know of an animal rescue group in the Gulf Region that needs supplies, please email us.
